- Set out a batten frame. A treated timber or metal frame is built around the perimeter of the home, standing on the hardstanding and held clear of the home itself. Nothing in the frame should touch the external elements of the home.
- Hold the 25mm gap. Set the frame so the finished top edge of the panels leaves the required minimum 25mm gap below the drip rail, open and unobstructed.
- Keep the base off the ground. Set the bottom edge clear of soil, mulch and standing water, and make sure ground levels will not be built up against it later.
- Sheathe the frame with a solid surface. This step is important and is often skipped. We recommend mounting the panels to a solid, continuous substrate rather than fixing them to open battens. Sheathe the frame with an exterior-grade board so the back of every panel is fully supported across its whole area. Panels fixed to bare battens are supported only where the battens run, which leaves the unsupported areas prone to flexing, drumming and cracking at the fixings — particularly on an exposed pitch. If you are cladding over an existing brick or block skirt, that masonry is already your solid surface and no additional sheathing is needed.
- Divide the perimeter into bays. Set the frame and sheathing out in bays, so every panel joint lands on a frame member. This is what makes the skirt demountable rather than monolithic.
- Plan the access bays before cutting anything. Decide where a plumber, gas engineer or insulation contractor is most likely to need to get in — usually near service entry points, the water and waste runs, and the axle stands — and designate those bays as removable.
- Build each access bay as one unit. Make the removable bay a self-contained section: its own sub-frame, its own sheathing, and its panels fixed to that sheathing. The whole assembly then unscrews and lifts out as a single piece, keeping the panel properly backed at all times.
- Deal with the tongue and groove at the access bays. The panels have interlocking sides, which is ideal for a continuous run but means a panel in the middle of a locked run cannot simply be pulled out. At each access bay, trim back the interlock and form a butt joint on both sides, then cover the joint with a vertical trim or land it on a natural vertical break in the stone pattern. The bay then lifts straight out.
- Cut in the ventilation. Grilles are cut through the panels and the sheathing behind them, at the positions and heights appropriate to each room and to the fuel type, sized to the guidance figure of approximately 150cm² each. - Measure your actual skirt height. It varies more than people expect and can change by 100mm or more from one corner to another on a sloping pitch. Dropping from a 450mm skirt to a 300mm skirt can nearly halve the panel count.
